Zouerat Iron Ore Complex
Zouérat, Tiris Zemmour Region, MR
SNIM's Zouérat iron ore complex in Mauritania's Tiris Zemmour region has drawn ore from the Kedia d'Idjil district since the 1950s, becoming a state-owned national enterprise in the mid-1970s. The operation now works from reserves exceeding a billion tonnes across several deposits, including Guelb Rhein and M'Haoudat, producing both high-grade haematite and siliceous ore. Ore is hauled roughly 700 kilometres to the Atlantic port of Nouadhibou aboard some of the longest freight trains in the world, a logistics chain that underpins much of Mauritania's export economy.
