Weipa

Weipa is Rio Tinto's bauxite mining hub on the Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland, built around deposits first mapped in the mid-1950s and in commercial production since 1963. It ranks among the largest bauxite operations anywhere, shipping tens of millions of tonnes of ore each year via a dedicated rail line to port, with most material processed further at refineries near Gladstone. The site also runs a solar power installation to supplement its energy mix.
