Red Dog
Kotzebue, Alaska, US
Red Dog is one of the world's largest zinc producers, located about 170 km north of the Arctic Circle in northwest Alaska near Kotzebue, with concentrate trucked along a dedicated haul road to a port on the Chukchi Sea for shipment to smelters in Asia and Europe. The open-pit operation has run since 1982 under a long-standing agreement between operator Teck and NANA, the Iñupiat-owned regional corporation that holds the land, and produced well over 450,000 tonnes of contained zinc in 2025. A share of proceeds flows into a village improvement fund supporting the surrounding northwest Arctic communities.
