Prominent Hill is a copper-gold-silver mine in the remote outback of northern South Australia, roughly 130 km from Coober Pedy, developed from an iron-oxide-copper-gold deposit discovered in the early 2000s. Brought into production in 2009 by Oxiana (later Oz Minerals), it passed to BHP in 2023 and now operates as both an open pit and twin underground mines, turning out copper concentrate graded among the highest in the industry. Output is trucked to rail and shipped from Port Adelaide, supporting a sizeable residential workforce village on site.
