Iron OreFifo8/62/1

Mount Whaleback, just west of Newman, anchors BHP's original Newman Hub and was developed from the late 1960s as the world's largest single open pit for iron ore. The mine shipped its first ore in 1969 and has since grown to roughly 5 kilometres long and 1.5 kilometres wide. Its development helped establish the town of Newman and the rail line to Port Hedland, and today the wider Newman Hub operation produces in the order of 60 million tonnes of ore each year.
