Mount Isa
Mount Isa, North West, QLD, AU
Mount Isa Mines is a long-running base metals complex in North West Queensland, built on a rich silver-lead-zinc discovery from 1923 and operated today by Glencore. Over a century of continuous mining it grew into one of Australia's most significant copper, lead, zinc and silver producers, with combined lease areas covering hundreds of square kilometres and ore bodies set in rock well over a billion years old. The site marked its hundredth anniversary in 2024, around the same time its underground copper operation wound down after some seven decades of production, with zinc-lead-silver mining continuing.
