Mogalakwena, operated by Anglo American Platinum near Mokopane in South Africa's Limpopo province, is recognised as the largest open-pit platinum group metals mine in the world. In production since 1993, it yields several hundred thousand ounces of refined platinum-group metals a year from extensive open-pit workings in the Waterberg district. The operation has recorded strong safety milestones, including stretches of over a million fatality-free shifts, and is now examining underground extensions to reach deeper ore reserves.
