Los Pelambres
Salamanca, Coquimbo Region, CL
Los Pelambres is a major open-pit copper mine high in the Andes of Chile's Coquimbo Region, roughly 45 km east of Salamanca, majority-owned and operated by Antofagasta Minerals. In production since 2000, it processes well over 100,000 tonnes of ore a day to yield copper concentrate along with molybdenum, gold and silver by-products. Multi-billion-dollar expansions have since added desalinated seawater supply and solar-sourced power to the operation, steadily lifting its output over the past two decades.
