Kibali
Watsa, Haut-Uele Province, CD
Kibali is a major gold mining operation in the Democratic Republic of Congo's Haut-Uele Province, near Watsa, developed jointly by Barrick, AngloGold Ashanti and state miner SOKIMO. Since starting up in 2013 it has grown into one of Africa's largest gold mines, combining open-pit and underground mining that feed a processing plant with more than 7 million tonnes of annual throughput. The site is largely self-powered by three hydropower stations on nearby rivers, backed up by thermal generation during the dry season.
