Johan Sverdrup
Stavanger, North Sea, Rogaland, NO
Johan Sverdrup is a giant oil field on the Utsira High in the Norwegian North Sea, roughly 140 kilometres west of Stavanger in Rogaland, developed and operated by Equinor. Found around 2010-2011 as one of the largest discoveries on the Norwegian continental shelf in decades, it moved to first production in October 2019 and expanded further with a second phase in 2022. At plateau the field alone supplies close to a third of Norway's total oil output, and it draws its power from shore rather than offshore generators, giving it an unusually low carbon footprint for a field of its size.
