Husab
Swakopmund, Erongo Region, NA
Husab is a large open-pit uranium mine in the Namib Desert of Namibia's Erongo Region, a short distance south of Swakopmund and the long-established Rössing mine. Developed by Swakop Uranium, majority-owned by China General Nuclear through Taurus Minerals with Namibia's Epangelo Mining holding a stake, the operation moved from licensing in 2011 to first production in 2016 after a roughly US$2 billion build. Spread across three open pits with reserves measured in the hundreds of millions of tonnes of ore, it ranks among the largest uranium mines on earth and the biggest open-pit operation anywhere on the African continent, with a planned mine life approaching two decades.
