Hope Downs 4 is an iron ore mine about 50 kilometres northwest of Newman in Western Australia's Pilbara, part of the Greater Hope Downs complex operated on an equal 50-50 basis by Rio Tinto and Hancock Prospecting. Hancock first explored the deposit in the early 1990s, with Rio Tinto joining as a partner in 2005 to help unlock the port and rail access needed to develop it; production began in 2013 with initial capacity of around 15 million tonnes of ore annually. The wider complex sits close to the Hamersley Range, which holds the bulk of Australia's identified iron ore reserves.
