Goonyella Riverside is a large open-cut metallurgical coal mine in Queensland's Bowen Basin, about 30 km north of Moranbah, operated by the BHP Mitsubishi Alliance. Mining began at Goonyella in 1971 and at the adjacent Riverside pit in 1982, with the two later merged into a single operation that now produces on the order of 15 to 17 million tonnes of premium coking coal each year. Coal is railed out via the Goonyella corridor to the port at Hay Point for export, prized by steelmakers for its strong coking qualities.
