CoalResidential5/2

Cerrejón is a vast open-pit coal mine in the La Guajira department of northern Colombia, near the town of Albania, majority-owned and operated by Glencore. Covering an area of more than 690 square kilometres, it is the largest open-pit coal operation in Latin America and ranks among the ten biggest in the world, producing low-ash, low-sulphur bituminous coal that has long made up a large share of Colombia's coal exports. A dedicated 150-kilometre railway links the mine to Puerto Bolívar, the region's major coal-export port, and the site is also known among palaeontologists as the place where fossils of Titanoboa, the largest snake yet discovered, were unearthed.
