For FIFO workers, that doesn't necessarily mean fewer jobs. Instead, it means the nature of many jobs is changing.

The modern mine is becoming a highly connected workplace. A haul truck can collect and transmit information about its location, speed, fuel consumption, tyre condition and mechanical performance. A drill rig can be monitored remotely, while maintenance teams can use real-time information to identify potential faults before a machine breaks down.

For workers, this creates a growing need to understand technology alongside traditional trade and operational skills.

Autonomous equipment doesn't mean people aren't needed

Autonomous haulage systems are one of the most visible examples of mining automation. Large trucks can operate along predetermined routes with limited direct intervention from an operator.

At first glance, automation might seem like a threat to traditional mining jobs. In practice, however, autonomous operations still require people to plan, supervise, maintain and troubleshoot the equipment.

The skills simply move further up the technology chain.

Instead of spending an entire shift physically operating a haul truck, a worker may find themselves monitoring several machines from a control room. Maintenance technicians may need to understand increasingly sophisticated electrical, hydraulic, computer and communications systems.

That creates opportunities for people willing to learn.

Maintenance workers are becoming technology specialists

Heavy diesel mechanics have always been essential to mining, oil and gas operations. As equipment becomes more sophisticated, their role is becoming even broader.

Modern mobile equipment can contain extensive electronic control systems, onboard computers, cameras, sensors and communications equipment. Diagnosing a fault may involve plugging into diagnostic software rather than simply opening the bonnet and looking for a mechanical problem.

Electricians and instrumentation technicians are also increasingly important.

As mines and resource projects introduce more electrified equipment, workers with skills across electrical systems, automation and instrumentation can find themselves particularly valuable.

For someone considering a career in the resources industry, this is worth remembering. A traditional trade qualification can be an excellent starting point, but continuing to develop digital and technology skills can make a significant difference over the course of a career.

Remote operations are changing the FIFO experience

Technology is also changing where mining work happens.

Some equipment can be operated from locations hundreds or even thousands of kilometres away from the mine. Control centres can bring together operators, engineers and technical specialists without requiring every person to physically stand beside the equipment.

This can potentially change FIFO roles in several ways.

Some workers may spend more time in control rooms rather than out in the pit. Others may work in specialist technical centres or support operations remotely. Meanwhile, traditional site-based roles will continue to be required for maintenance, inspections, construction, logistics and safety.

The result is a resources industry that increasingly combines hands-on work with digital technology.

What does this mean for someone looking to get into mining?

The good news is that you don't necessarily need to be a computer programmer to benefit from mining's technology boom.

Employers still need people who understand machinery, safety, maintenance, production and practical problem-solving. What is changing is the expectation that workers can interact with technology as part of their job.

Being comfortable with digital systems, electronic diagnostics, tablets, monitoring systems and technical documentation can all be useful.

For young workers, apprentices and people considering a move into mining, the message is simple: don't think of technology as something replacing the industry. Think of it as another skill you can add to your toolbox.

The mining jobs of the future are likely to be a mixture of mechanical expertise, digital systems and human decision-making.

The workers who can operate comfortably across all three areas may be among the most valuable on site.
